Why Bill Thurman Mattered

Bill Thurman was one of the most influential advocates for the Pick and MultiValue community during its formative years. Through his leadership in publishing, conferences, user organizations, and industry promotion, he helped transform a collection of independent Pick users into a vibrant international community. His work gave developers, vendors, educators, and customers opportunities to share knowledge, build relationships, and advance MultiValue technology together. Many of the collaborative traditions that continue within the MultiValue community today can be traced to the foundation Bill helped establish.

In Memoriam

The MultiValue community remembers Bill Thurman as one of its earliest champions and most enthusiastic ambassadors. While many pioneers advanced the technology itself, Bill devoted his career to bringing people together. He recognized that the long-term success of the Pick operating system depended not only on innovative software, but also on a strong, connected community willing to share ideas, experiences, and knowledge.

During the early 1980s, Bill became one of the driving forces behind the growth of the Pick industry. Through the founding of Climax Computer Corporation and his involvement in industry organizations, he worked tirelessly to promote Pick technology to businesses and developers alike. His vision extended beyond selling products; he understood the importance of creating an ecosystem where users, software developers, hardware manufacturers, and vendors could collaborate for the benefit of the entire industry.

Bill was also instrumental in the development of industry publications and conferences that became gathering places for the growing Pick community. As publisher of PICKWORLD magazine, he helped provide one of the first dedicated publications focused entirely on Pick technology. The magazine showcased technical articles, product announcements, customer success stories, and industry news, helping connect a rapidly expanding community of professionals around the world.

Equally significant was Bill's role in supporting the International Database Management Association (IDBMA) and the Pick Spectrum conferences. These events became much more than trade shows. They fostered collaboration, encouraged innovation, and created lasting professional relationships that shaped the direction of the MultiValue industry for decades. Many longtime members of the community trace some of their most important friendships and business relationships back to those early conferences that Bill helped make possible.

Bill believed that technology flourishes when people are willing to share ideas. His efforts helped create an environment where competitors could become collaborators, where newcomers could learn from experienced professionals, and where innovation could spread rapidly throughout the industry. Although Bill passed away far too soon following a stroke in 1993, his influence continued through the organizations he helped build and the publications that educated an entire generation of MultiValue professionals. His wife, Phyllis, continued serving the community for many years as Managing Editor of Database Trends, extending the commitment they shared to promoting and preserving the industry.

Bill Thurman's legacy is measured not only by the companies he founded or the events he organized, but by the community he helped create. Every conference that brings MultiValue professionals together, every technical publication that shares knowledge, and every collaboration that strengthens the industry reflects the vision Bill championed throughout his career. His dedication reminds us that while great technologies are built by innovators, thriving industries are built by communities.
