Though his life was cut tragically short, the example he set continues to inspire those who knew him.

The MultiValue community remembers Jay Otto not only as an exceptional engineer, but as one of the kindest and most respected members of his generation. Jay's introduction to the MultiValue world came through the mentorship of Joseph Cupp Jr., who taught him while he was a student at Liberty Christian School. Under Joe's guidance, Jay quickly developed into a talented engineer, learning D3 support during its early Windows NT implementation before expanding his expertise into Windows, Microsoft Exchange, Citrix, and numerous other technologies. Whatever challenge the company faced, Jay approached it with determination, mastering new skills and applying them for the benefit of customers and coworkers alike.

As Zumasys' first engineer, Jay played an important role during the company's formative years. His technical versatility and commitment to customer success helped establish the culture of excellence that would become one of the company's defining characteristics. Whether solving complex infrastructure problems or assisting customers after hours, Jay approached every task with professionalism and quiet confidence. His work reflected the dedication that has long distinguished the MultiValue community.

Jay's life was marked not only by professional accomplishment but also by personal courage. Following a relapse of melanoma, he faced his illness with remarkable strength while embracing life's greatest joys. He found love, married his wife Barbie, and welcomed the birth of their son, Jay Jr. Although his life ended far too soon on March 29, 2007, those who knew him remember not his illness, but his optimism, generosity, and unwavering character.

Jay's influence continues to be felt throughout Zumasys and the broader MultiValue community. His memory lives on through the engineers he inspired, the customers he served, and the friendships he built. Zumasys has honored his legacy in numerous ways, including the Jay Jr. college fund and the Jay Otto Patrol Station at Snow Summit, reflecting the profound impact he had on everyone around him.
